  5. WELCOME TO FileNotes Version 3.2 FOR Windows 95
  6. (This version will not run on Windows NT)

  8. Whats New in Version 3.2
  9. 1.)    Fixed problems exhibited when coexisting 
  10.     with other monitoring utilities such as
  11.     anti-virus programs and    system monitor 
  12.     programs.
  13.  
  14. 2.)    Increased integration with Windows 95 
  15.     Shell.  This version adds a 
  16.     "FileNotes Brief" column to the Windows
  17.     Explorer that will display the first 
  18.     256 characters of an associated note.
  19.  
  20. 3.)    FileNotes adds an interface to Explorer
  21.     Style Open/Save As dialogs.  Files and
  22.     folders with associated notes are tagged
  23.     with the FileNotes icon and when selected,
  24.     display the associated note.
  25.     The Save As dialog allows you to edit
  26.     or add notes when you save a file.

  28. 4.)    The FileNotes Configuration Utility allows
  29.     you to modify some of the settings for 
  30.     FileNotes.  Including whether or not to
  31.     display the FileNotes Monitor icon in the
  32.     system tray, whether or not to display
  33.     notes in the Windows Explorer and Explorer
  34.     Style dialogs.  The configuration utility
  35.     also allows you to cancel the automatic
  36.     file extensions that some applications add
  37.     when you save a file.

  41. To determine if you need to upgrade your 
  42. COMCTL32.DLL you should install FileNotes. 
  43. After installing FileNotes, open the 
  44. Windows 95 Explorer and right Click on a 
  45. File or Folder.  Select Properties from the 
  46. right click menu.  If the properties dialog 
  47. does not display correctly then you need to 
  48. upgrade your COMCTL32.DLL.

  53. Features and Limitations
  54. ------------------------
  55. FileNotes integrates with Windows 95 to
  56. allow you to keep notes about all your 
  57. files and folders.  You create and access
  58. all your notes through the Windows 95
  59. Explorer.  To access and create notes, 
  60. simply right click the mouse on any file 
  61. or folder.  FileNotes can be accessed by
  62. right clicking on any folder or file object
  63. on the system including the desktop and 
  64. file open dialog boxes.

  66. The notes that you create will follow 
  67. your files and folders whereever you copy
  68. them.  When you copy or move a file or 
  69. folder, the new files created will have 
  70. the same note as the original.

  72. When you use the Windows 95 Explorer to 
  73. delete a file, the note will follow the 
  74. file to the recycle bin so that if you 
  75. restore the file, the note will also be 
  76. restored.  Unfortunately, this version 
  77. will not preserve notes for folders that 
  78. are sent to the recycle bin.

  80. FileNotes includes the FileNotes Explorer 
  81. that allows you to quickly find, review, 
  82. add and update your notes.  The FileNotes 
  83. Explorer can be accessed from either the 
  84. Start | Programs menu or from the Windows 
  85. Explorer right click menu.

  87. This version of FileNotes does not support 
  88. short file names.  This means that when you 
  89. move or copy files and folders in a DOS box, 
  90. you must use the long file name if you want 
  91. your notes to follow your files and folders.  
  92. Remember that if your long file name has a 
  93. space in it you must put double quotes around 
  94. it.  Also note that the short and long filenames 
  95. are the same for files with names within the 8.3
  96. format.
